Full Description

A number of magnetic anomalies of possible archaeological origin were identified in this location in August 2012, during geophysical survey on land adjacent to Holywell Quarry, Clipsham. The anomalies were interpreted as the remains of possible pits and ditches of unknown date. {1} A linear feature, thought to represent the remains of a ditch or long pit, was recorded here in May 2013, during subsequent trial trenching of this land. The feature was aligned on an east to west axis and corresponded well with one of the geophysical anomalies previously recorded here. A very large assemblage of mid to late Iron Age pottery was recovered from the fill, along with a quantity of animal bone. Although the majority of the bone was poorly preserved, a number of fragments could be identified as the remains of cattle. {2}{3}
