Full Description

A buried soil layer containing sherds of medieval pottery and tile was exposed in March 2012, at the north-western corner of Castle Close, Ancaster, during the monitoring of the excavation of a new electrical cable trench. The layer also contained fragments of redeposited Roman material (see PRN 30324) and a small assemblage of human bones, all from an infant of such a young stage of development as to imply a still-birth. The human remains could not be dated conclusively, and could belong to the redeposited Roman material, though a medieval date may be more likely, given their relatively good condition. {1}{2}
