Description

In 1962 Nottingham University bought two fields in Ancaster (OS fields 111 and 208) that between them covered a major part of the Roman walled settlement there. The univeristy used this site for its training digs in 1962 to 1967 and in 1970-71. They opened 21 trenches in the course of this excavation, the last in the summer of 1971. The university also excavated extra-mural sites to the west and east of the walled area of the town, as well as at Castle Quarry to the southeast.
