Abstract/Summary
Nottingham Univerity Museum has the documentary archive and parts of the material archive from the Ancaster Cemetery excavations which took place during the 1960s and early 1970s. The skeletal remains were transferred into the care of English Heritage, who also carried out analysis and wrote a report. The current contact at Historic England is at: Fort Cumberland, Fort Cumberland Road, Portsmouth, Hampshire, P04 9LD. We have some of the pottery and other finds, although it seems to be the case that a certain amount of material was withdrawn for study and it is not clear that all was returned – we are still investigating this as resources allow. The site was never fully written up and remains unpublished, although interim reports were published as the work progressed. David Wilson endeavoured to draw everything together in the early 2000s, but his work was not completed and it is notable that he makes reference to issues in the organisation and completeness of the archive that go back to the time of the excavations. None of the material is digitised or indexed and we have very limited resources to address this, although we have made a start on organising and listing. Yes do refer enquiries to the museum, but please be aware that, as with many archives of this era, it is not accessible in the sense one might expect a contemporary archive to be and manage expectations accordingly.
We have some material relating excavations by C. Green in the late 1950s - from around the Vicarage, I think - but we do not appear to have records so this is going on what is written on the boxes.
There are also some smaller volumes of material from Ancaster Quarry and a Sewer Trench – again we appear to have little to no documentation in the museum, although a quick glance through the EMAB produces references of work undertaken by the university which may correlate with the objects.
We are gradually working through legacy backlogs of this nature and improving records, as resources allow. Over time I hope we will be able to provide a more complete account of our holdings and their origins.
I believe the material excavated by Malcolm Todd around the town defences is held by Lincolnshire County Museums.
