Full Description
PRN 20250
Roman red and white tesserae and tile has been recovered from the site of the medieval chapel. {1}
Also there have been possible finds of saltmaking debris on this site, or saltern-related activities. However, there is no reference to this in the C. W. Philips, 'The Fenland in Roman Times' (1970), gazetteer. {2}{3}
A geophysical survey was carried out to investigate this site after further tesserae, including sizeable pieces of floor consisting of 10-15 tesserae still held together by mortar, and other Roman finds were discovered during fieldwalking following deep ploughing in 1999, suggesting the presence of a high status building (possibly a bath house). However, the geophysical survey found no evidence of a Roman building. {4}
The site was investigated further in 2004, when it was field walked and a trial excavation was carried out. An occupation layer carbon-dated to AD 80-250 was revealed in one trench. Another trench was sited in an area with a dense surface scatter of tesserae. A north-south aligned linear feature, possibly a foundation trench, was discovered here. The fieldwalking produced a large quantity of tesserae as well as smaller quantities of Roman pottery, roof tile and brick as well as a 4th century coin. The investigations also revealed that the site is being badly damaged by deep ploughing. {5}
