Description

Two trial trenches were excavated on land either side of Archer Lane, between Fountain Lane and Colley Street, Boston, to inform the proposed development of the site. Brick and limestone structural remains of 16th to 19th century date were identified in both trenches, some of which aligned with buildings depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey maps of Boston. A large pit or ditch in the northern trench yielded large quantities of 14th-15th century pottery, tile and food waste. Underlying the structural deposits in both trench was a deep layer of alluvial silts containing charred grain, suggesting Medieval or earlier crop processing near the site. {1}{2}
