Full Description

During trial trenching in October 2011, evidence was found of continuous post-Medieval occupation spanning from the 16th to the 19th century, on land to the north of Fountain Lane, Boston. The foundational remains of a number of brick and limestone structures and three brick-lined waste pits were encountered. Some of the wall foundations showed signs of having been repaired or extended over time, and material remains indicative of occupation, including pottery, tile and brick, animal bone, clay pipe, and glass, was recovered from the construction trenches and associated deposits. Two of the north-south aligned wall segments revealed during this investigation appeared to line up with the exterior walls of two buildings depicted on the 1st and 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey 25" County Series maps. {1}{2}{3}{4} White's 2nd Edition Trade Directory of Lincolnshire, published in 1856, notes that Fountain Lane was home to people in numerous trades, including coal merchants, blacksmiths, cobblers, bricklayers, butchers, turners and shopkeepers. {5}
