Description
Twenty trial trenches were excavated on land at Blanchard Road, Louth, prior to the construction of a residential development. A series of undated pits and ditches were revealed. The only positively dated feature of significance was a probable ditch from which Late Iron Age/Roman pottery was recovered, though the presence of post-Medieval gullies and furrows was also noted. {1}{2}
The investigation encountered a backfilled post-Medieval watercourse depicted on historic mapping that was identified during a prior geophysical survey (see ELI14547). A number of geophysical anomalies identified during that survey were either revealed to be natural in origin or were not identified at all by the trial trenching.
The probable Late Iron Age/Roman ditch identified during this project was revealed by a programme of strip, map and record (see ELI14549) to be an elongated pit. A group of circular features tentatively identified as stakeholes was not encountered during the strip, map and record, and was therefore assumed to be the result of burrowing or root action.
