Description
A scheme of archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken at 102 Ermine Street, Ancaster. The work was undertaken prior to the construction of two extensions at the property. Two stone layers were uncovered in both section 3 and 5. These were nhoted to have been possible floors for structures, with the stone layer at section 3 close to the road noted as posible forming part of an earlier road layer. Lack of evidence and the potential for ground disturbance from an earlier trench means this is not definitive. A Roman pot sherd, dating to the 2nd-4th centuries, was found within section 3, though it is possible this was residual. A number of Roman pottery sherd were uncovered in the topsoil during the works, which have been identified as residual. These were identified as residual, given the proximity to the Roman town on Ancaster. A Roman clay tile was also uncovered in the topsoil, which suggests the possibility of a nearby structure. The topsoil also contained several 19th-20th century pottery sherds, animal bones and ceramic building material, likely coming from Braid's Mill located to the North of the site. No other significant archaeological artefacts, finds or features were found. [1][2]
