Full Description

Two stone layers were identified during a watching brief at 102 Ermine Street, Ancaster. The layers were located in two separate area. The first, located approximately 2m from the present building in the southern trench, was sub-angular platy large limestone, 120mm by 80mm by 50mm, possibly forming a hard standing floor. The second layer was located in section 3, in close proximity to Ermine Street, consisting of 50% sub-angular limestone measuring 40-60mm in diameter and occasional large sub-angular platy limestones, 120-150mm by 50-70mm. A single sherd of Roman pottery, identified as Nene Valley ware and dated from the mid 2nd to the 4th century, was uncovered from the layer at Section 3, though this is thought to be residual. The layer was also interupted by a water pipe trench. The layers are suggested to have been either structural in nature or possibly an earlier phase of the nearby road. However, the lack of finds and the disturbance from water pipe trench means that the precise nature of the features is uncertain. {1}
