Full Description

Four unstratified Roman finds were uncovered during a watching brief at 102 Ermine Street, Ancaster. The finds included was a single piece of greyware, dated from the 1st to 4th century, and three sherds of Nene Valley ware, dated to the mid-2nd to the 4th century. Three of the sherds were found within the topsoil and are thought to be residual. One piece of Nene Valley ware was found within a stone layer close to the road. This is also believed to be residual. Also recovered from the topsoil was a large fragment of Roman tegula tile. The tile was noted to have been of interest as it could be indicative of a nearby occupation away from the main Roman settlement at Ancaster. The finds may be related to the probable Roman cemetery (MLI124904). {1} {2}
