Description
A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was conducted during groundworks for drainage improvements in the churchyard of St Andrew's Church, South Thoresby. Articulated human bones uncovered by drainage trench excavations were left undisturbed in situ, while disarticulated human bones recovered from the trench were collected and reinterred on site. A possible stone structure or foundation was encountered to the south of the church, consisting of grey-green sandstone blocks, oriented northeast to southwest, with a worked face to the southeast. While excavating the trench for the french drains along the north and south walls of the church, two lost post-Medieval crypts were revealed. Both crypts were constructed of green sandstone and brick, with a brick barrel vaulted ceiling, and contained three coffins. There is evidence that the southern crypt may have been broken into; at least one of the coffins showed evidence of tampering. One of the coffins in the northern crypt contained the remains of Willoughby Wood, a 19th century lord of the manor. {1}{2}
