Description
Nine trial trenches were excavated on land to the south of Witham Road, Woodhall Spa, to inform a proposed residential development. At the western end of the site, two ditches and a sub-rectangular feature were encountered. All three produced Late Iron Age pottery, suggesting these features are associated with the known nearby Iron Age settlement to the west (see ELI6837 and ELI6838). A possible watering hole or quarry was encountered just to the east, though no dating evidence was recovered from its fills. This feature corresponds with the geophysical survey's possible pit group (see ELI14128). Further to the northeast were a number of undated shallow features, possibly associated with an adjacent late 19th century building 'Gate House'. In the northeast corner of the site was a late post-Medieval field boundary depicted on historic mapping from the early-mid 19th century, infilled by 1890. {1}{2}
Subsequent open area excavation at the western end of the site (see ELI14135) revealed that the 'sub-rectangular' feature was actually a segment of a ring ditch or drip gully, significantly truncated by modern plough scars and field drains.
