Description

Three trial trenches were excavated to inform proposed residential development on land at Maidenwell Manor, Maidenwell. The investigation revealed a number of Medieval or post-Medieval ditches, one of which may have been a boundary ditch for agricultural land or for an earlier iteration of the manor house. No evidence was found for the possible foundations identified during the geophysical survey on the site. The only structural element identified was a single chalk block immediately to the south of the house, likely used as a post pad for a timber building of unknown date. Evidence of potential earlier buildings on the site included a number of bricks recovered from the subsoil and the fills of three ditches. One of these was given a 14th-16th century date, with the others dating predominantly from the 17th-19th centuries. {1}{2}
