Description

A geophysical survey was conducted to inform proposed development on land to the east of Boston Road, Sibsey. Anomalies representing potential archaeological features were encountered along both Boston Road to the west and Station Road to the north. An east-west aligned linear feature in the north of the site aligned closely with extant property boundaries further east. Further linears and areas of response in the west of the site reflect the alignment of Chapel Lane, the precursor to Boston Road. These features likely represent boundary ditches and waste pits associated with Medieval or post-Medieval roadside settlement. {1}{2} Subsequent trial trenching (see ELI14017) on the same site targeting concentrations of anomalies encountered six ditches. One of these was dated to the post-Medieval period and the rest attributed to mid- or late Medieval activity. Six Medieval waste pits corresponding to areas of high response were also identified.
