Description

A programme of trial trenching was undertaken on land at 6-9 Swinegate, Grantham, prior to development of the site. Two trenches were excavated, both measuring 7.5m x 1.6m. A large amount of Saxo-Norman to medieval pot was recovered as unstratified or residual, indicating associated activity. A medieval pit was identified, containing finds dating to the 12th-14th century. A stone surface was also identified, and appears to have represented part of a large oven or hearth with a fired clay and roundwood superstructure, probably of medieval origin. A series of post-medieval pits (18th-19th century) were also identified in the trenches. {1}{2}
