Full Description

A programme of trial trenching was undertaken on land at 6-9 Swinegate, Grantham. A pit was identified in Trench 1, measuring 1.2m deep. It contained a greyish brown silty sand fill interleaved with a band of charcoal. A stone surface was also identified in Trench 1, composed of irregular fragments of limestone, circa 60mm thick and laid flat. The surface was heat reddened in places and a bonding of light grey silty clay was present around the southern perimeter. It was truncated to the east. This surface is likely to represent the base of an oven or hearth, which is likely to be medieval in date. Fragments of fired clay with roundwood impressions collected from the same sample suggest that a large superstructure was carried on the outer plinth, suggesting an industrial/craft usage. {1}{2}
