Description

Two trial trenches were excavated as part of a community archaeological investigation of a field in the west of Ancaster, to the east of Pottergate Road. The trenches were targeted to investigate a number of geophysical anomalies recorded by a prior earth resistance survey (see ELI12870). The anomalies had been thought to represent areas of potential archaeological remains, but all of the investigated examples were resolved as near-surface geological variation or recent made-ground deposits, with no archaeological features or deposits identified. An assemblage of redeposited Roman pottery and tile was recovered, however, along with two sherds of redeposited medieval pottery. {1}
