Description

Three trial trenches were excavated as part of a community archaeological investigation of a field in the south of Ancaster, known as Cemetery Field. The trenches were targeted to investigate a number of geophysical anomalies recorded by a prior earth resistance survey (see ELI12868). The anomalies had been thought to represent areas of potential archaeological remains, but all of the investigated examples were resolved as near-surface geological variation, with no archaeological features or deposits identified. An assemblage of redeposited Roman pottery was recovered, however, along with a Roman coin and a probable Roman finger-ring. {1}
