Description

An excavation was undertaken to investigate the remains of a saltern, prior to the re-wetting of the surrounding land at Willow Tree Farm, Deeping St Nicholas. The excavation revealed part of the saltern complex, including numerous deposits of dumped material, and several drainage features and associated settling tanks. A later system of ditches, partially overlying the saltern, were also recorded, indicating the land became part of the 2nd to 4th century field system after the saltern went out of use. A considerable quantity of briquetage was recovered from the excavation, along with 1st to 3rd century pottery and two bone hair pins. {1}{2}
