Full Description

Area of extensive cropmarks, including field systems, drove roads, old watercourses and industrial sites, and many areas of Romano-British finds. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6} Specific features and finds identified include: Ditched enclosures visible on aerial photographs (PRN 22409a - TF 187 226). {7} Romano-British domestic and salt working site, with 1st and 2nd century pottery (PRN 22409b - TF 1926 2210). The site comprised soilmarks of rectilinear fields, droves and roddons, and included 'a low hillock consisting of briquetage and pulverized red clay', domestic and saltern debris, and late 2nd century pottery. Further spreads of pottery, fired clay, bone, and burnt cobbles were also identified in distinct scatters over this area. {8}{9}{10} Saltern debris including briquetage and some burnt stone, on the flank of a high silt roddon within silty clay area (PRN 22409c - TF 1859 2249). {11} Pottery and some fired clay, slag, bone, burnt stone and shell were recovered (PRN 22409d - TF 1775 2220). The briquetage is unusual. {12} Powdered burnt red earth was seen at the bottom of deep plough furrows (PRN 22409e - TF 1962 2198). An adjacent scatter of domestic material indicated occupation from late lst to mid 2nd century AD. There is a possibility that the material is redeposited from elsewhere. {13}{14} An area of domestic remains and saltworkings (PRN 22409f - TF 186 218). Finds including pottery, bone, briquetage and querns were identified in an area of dark soilmarks, all on the sites of roddons. {15} Areas of Roman domestic material with nearby saltworkings to the west and north (PRN 22409g - TF 1822 2233). The suspected industrial sites were marked by scatterings of briquetage, and were located within small, distinct meandering roddons. Finds identified in this area include pottery, bone, slag, three querns, and burnt stone. The soil has pink and red tinges in the areas of saltworking. {16}{17} A rectilinear enclosure system was located during a magnetometer survey (PRN 22409h - TF 1893 2187). Subsequent excavation through the northern side of the system lcoated a 1.6m wide ditch. Although no finds were recovered, a Roman date for the enclosure system seems likely. {18}{19} A number of linear magnetic anomalies were recorded during a magnetometry survey, conducted in 2010, as part of investigations of land at Willow Tree Farm, Deeping St Nicholas (PRN 22409i - TF 1777 2211). These anomalies corresponded well to the pattern of linear ditches, previously identified on aerial photographs. {20}{21} Subsequent excavation conducted on this site in 2011 revealed evidence of the system of linear ditches, previously identified by the magnetometry survey. The ditches were shown to partially overlie the remains of a saltern complex (see PRN 20285), suggesting that this area of land was converted into agricultural use soon after the saltern was abandoned, towards the end of the 2nd century. A small quantity of 2nd to 3rd century pottery and animal bone was recovered from the ditches. {22}{23}
