Abstract/Summary

Report on a programme of archaeological evaluation comprising ten trial trenches excavated along the route of the proposed Grantham Southern Relief Road to inform its construction; this was the second phase of an earlier investigation (see ELI14800). A continuation of the Roman settlement found in the first phase evaluation was encountered, including several metalled surfaces and occupation layers and a second probable building. More Roman pottery was recovered, along with iron slag, animal bone, and a single coin of 4th century AD date. Further to the northeast, two undated parallel ditches possibly forming opposite sides of an enclosure, were revealed.
