Abstract/Summary

Report on an archaeological excavation conducted on land at Church Hill, Washingborough, to preserve by record known archaeological features in advance of proposed residential development. Two undated, though possibly post-Medieval, lime kilns were revealed. The first was the 'keyhole'-shaped possible flare kiln identified during the prior programme of trial trenching (see ELI14721), while the second was a sub-rectangular kiln measuring 7.2m long, 2.55m wide and 0.98m deep. A clay pipe stem and a fragment of 19th-20th century tile were recovered from an upper fill of this feature. An unstratified iron dining fork with a bone handle of 15th-17th century date was also recovered.
