Full Description
An undated linear earthwork on land at Church Hill, Washingborough. A slight linear mound was observed running approximately north-south during a site visit in 2016. No trace of the earthwork was noted during subsequent trial trenching and excavation of the site, and the earthwork was assumed to have been reduced by contractors prior to commencement of the archeological mitigation works. However, the earthwork is still clearly visible on LIDAR imagery (as of November 2025), with the scars of two trial trenches clearly visible cutting across it. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
The HER is of the opinion that this earthwork may represent a bank flanking a road or trackway. The current route of Church Hill to the south is roughly aligned with the earthwork, before the road turns northwest, skirting the grounds of the former manor house (MLI81026) within which the earthwork now lies. It is possible, therefore, that the route of Church Hill was moved when the manor house grounds were laid out (see also the record for the possibly post-Medieval lime kilns MLI127877, one of which may be cut into the earthwork).
