Abstract/Summary

The archive on archaeological trial trenching, consisting of 11 trenches, was undertaken on land north of London Road, Kirton. The work was underteken prior to a proposed residential development. Two trenches in the centre of the site revealed linear ditches that run east to west, and coincided to two parallel linear features identified during a previous geophysical survey. The northernmost ditch contained brick and other ceramic building material (CBM) of mid-19th to 20th century date, while no finds were recovered from the southernmost ditch. A feature was revealed on the southern portion of the excavation area, which matches a pond feature identified on the 1889 and 1951 Ordinance survey mapping. The feature contained a single sherd of medieaval pottery, as well as pottery and CBM of 19th to 20th century date. A further feature was also identified in the northern portion of the area, which contained 13th to 15th century pottery and post medieval CBM, this feature was identified as a pond.
