Abstract/Summary
Report on a programme of archaeological evaluation comprising six trial trenches excavated on land at Stamford and Rutland Hospital to inform proposed development of the site. At the eastern end of the site, an undated limestone wall running north-northeast to south-southwest was encountered. The northwestern- and western-most trenches revealed skeletal remains in six grave cuts as well as five more possible grave cuts. None of the graves were exposed completely in the trenches, and the human remains were covered and preserved in situ. The northwestern trench also revealed the remains of another undated limestone wall, this one aligned northwest-southeast. A disturbed area of limestone cornbrash measuring up to 1.6m deep was the only feature encountered in two central trenches; this was interpreted as a pit backfilled with demolition material from the demolished friary.
