Abstract/Summary
Report on a programme of archaeological evaluation comprising nine trial trenches excavated on land to the east of Dalby Road, Partney, to inform a proposed residential development. A northwest-southeast aligned rectangular enclosure of Late Iron Age to Roman date, identified on the preceding geophysical survey (see ELI14118) was encountered. This was interpreted as agricultural in origin due to the small number of artefacts recovered, possibly a stock enclosure associated with the nearby settlement (see MLI88651). Within and around this enclosure, a number of other pit and ditch features were encountered, including recuts of the enclosure ditches, suggesting prolonged use. The presence of a large natural pond or palaeochannel (also encountered in the geophysical survey) was noted at the western edge of the site.
