Abstract/Summary

Report on a magnetometry survey was conducted on land at Dalby Road, Partney, to inform a proposed residential development. The survey covered two areas, a large area to the west of Dalby Road and a much smaller area to the east of the road. An extensive series of possible ditches and pits was encountered in the western area, including most of a northwest-southeast aligned rectilinear enclosure with a sub-enclosure at its southern corner. Two large pit-like anomalies adjacent to the possible enclosure ditches with strong magnetic readings were interpreted as either quarry pits or areas of burning. The survey also encountered two possible trackways, one running along the outside of the enclosure's southwestern edge and the other at right angles to the first. Anomalies reflecting the probable remains of east-west aligned ridge and furrow was also noted at the western end of the site. The eastern area was considered to have limited archaeological potential, with magnetic readings mostly attributed to modern activity.
