Abstract/Summary

Archive for a programme of trial trenching, comprising sixteen trial trenches excavated on land adjacent to Coronation Farm, Burgh Road West, Skegness, to inform the proposed installation of a solar farm and associated infrastructure. Trenches were placed to target anomalies seen in the geophysical survey (see ELI14028). One of the two areas of targeted dipolar response was revealed to be a large mound sealed by alluvial deposits, containing large quantities of briquetage associated with salterns positively dated as Roman. The other was revealed to be a number of features, including a 17m long spread of briquetage rubble containing a burnt clay oven base on a foundation more briquetage, and two circular pits containing animal bone and Roman pottery. It was suggested from the quality of the briquetage that this represented local, rather than industrial, salt production. Two natural palaeochannels were also identified, one of which was adjacent to the briqeutage spread; a large quantity of Roman pottery and animal bone, some burnt, was recovered from the fill of this channel. Two undated ditches and a further ditch visible on historic field boundary maps were also noted.
