Full Description

During trial trenching on this site in 2014, archaeologists encountered a large mound sealed by alluvial deposits, containing large quantities of briquetage associated with salterns positively dated as Roman. Nearby were a number of associated features, including a 17m long spread of briquetage rubble containing a burnt clay oven base on a foundation more briquetage, and two circular pits containing animal bone and Roman pottery. It was suggested from the quality of the briquetage that this represented local, rather than industrial, salt production. Two natural palaeochannels were also identified, one of which was adjacent to the briqeutage spread; a large quantity of Roman pottery and animal bone, some burnt, was recovered from the fill of this channel. {1}{2}{3}
