Abstract/Summary

Report on a magnetometry survey conducted to inform the proposed construction of a residential development on land off Low Road, Barrowby. The majority of the magnetic anomalies recorded by the survey were thought to reflect modern allotment cultivation. A single positively identified linear was considered to possibly represent an archaeological feature, such as a boundary ditch. Features interpreted as possible medieval ridge and furrow were also identified across the site. It was considered possible that the large amount of magnetic noise across the site, as well as modern drainage and an existing foul water pipe, may have masked more ephemeral archaeological features. {1} Subsequent trial trenching in this area identified the linear feature as an undated (though possibly pre-medieval boundary ditch), although the possible ridge and furrow could not be positively identified (see ELI13943).
