Abstract/Summary

Report on the remains of three likely Saxo-Norman ditches recorded in May 2018, during trial trenching undertaken to inform the proposed construction of a residential development on land off Station Road, Kirton. Pottery sherds dating to the 11th and 12th centuries and animal bone fragments were recovered from all three ditches. Environmental sampling from the two northernmost ditches recovered quantities of charred barley and wheat grains, weed seeds, pulses (pea and bean), bones of mouse, newt, toad, herring, and small fish, bird eggshell (tentatively ascribed to chicken and goose), and snail shells indicative of open grassland. One goose ulna fragment was recovered from the southernmost ditch, and showed signs of being worked; two holes had been punched into it, one above the other, possibly to create a musical instrument.
