Abstract/Summary
Archive for the programme of archaeological excavation conducted in advance of landscaping in a new pond area, as well as an archaeological monitoring and recording conducted of groundworks where landscaping impacted in other areas. The earliest feature in the excavation area is a posthole in the north-eastern area of the site, containing 5th-9th century pottery sherds. The next phase appears to be medieval. Extensive pond deposits were seen across the eastern half of the stripped area. Pottery sherds recovered from one of these pond deposits were identified from the 13th-15th century. This pond was cut by two parallel undated ditches. The eastern of these cuts the western one, which was overlain by a deposit containing 13th-15th century pottery sherds. Two further ditches were identified, one containing a likely residual Mesolithic-Neolithic flint. These ditches are likely to be contemporary, and appear to form an enclosure, possibly of medieval date. There are eleven undated postholes in the excavation area, four of which are within the possible enclosure, and a further four within the possible enclosure which appear to form a structure sort as a hay or grain store. No further archaeological features were identified in the excavation area. The monitoring and recording of the groundworks did not identify any archaeological features or finds.
