Report on a programme of archaeological evaluation, carried out to inform proposed development on land at Borderville Farm, Stamford. 17 trial trenches were excavated to verify the results of earlier geophysical survey (see ELI13191). The trenches uncovered a probable late Iron Age or early Roman settlement area, with most of the excavated features likely being field system ditches. The settlement area was an elongated enclosure with internal divisions, potentially related to stock management. A burial containing articulated human remains was found in the the south-west corner of the field. Artefacts recovered included late Iron Age pottery, Romano-British pottery dating from the mid 1st to the early 2nd century AD, a small amount of animal bone, and a small assemblage of Neolithic to Bronze Age tools. Subsequent archaeological excavations on the site exposed more of the late Iron Age and early Roman settlement, with associated agricultural and industrial activity. The probable pit alignment identified by the earlier geophysical survey was determined to be of modern origin (see ELI13193).
