Abstract/Summary
Archive for the excavation of eight trial trenches and twelve test pits, dug to assess the impacts of rabbit burrowing and ploughing upon the scheduled archaeological remains in the field known as the 'Tiltyard', at Tattershall Castle. The trenches were targeted to investigate a number of geophysical anomalies recorded by several prior geophysical surveys of this area, and confirmed the presence of a number of medieval and post-medieval pit, ditch and wall features, clearly associated with the castle. The trenching also resolved a series of linear magnetic anomalies at the western edge of the survey area as a group of probable garden features or terraces, likely contemporary with the intial re-building of the castle in c.1440. The test pits were dug to investigate the survival and distribution of artefacts within the topsoil in this area, and recovered a large range of redeposited medieval and post-medieval finds, along with two redeposited sherds of Roman pottery.
