Title E-mail about Carbon 14 dates from Nettleton
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2007

Abstract/Summary

On Monday I received a report from the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC) on the samples sent for Carbon 14 dating from Nettleton. Both samples were successfully dated and come out as Neolithic and are in good agreement, dating to about 3500/3600BC when calibrated. They were derived from a group of bone at the bottom of a well preserved palisade slot at Trench D. They are very important dates as they provide the only secure dating for this early horizon of features at the site. Clearly there was much activity on this part of the Wolds during this period and these new dates show earlier activity than the feature/s associated with the early BA flat axe found in a feature in 1998 (Trench A).
