Archive for the excavation of three trial trenches, dug to inform proposed residential development on land off Tothby Lane, Alford. The trenches were targeted to investigate a large number of geophysical anomalies recorded by a prior magnetometry survey (see ELI12677), and confirmed the presence of extensive settlement features of 3rd century Roman date, including a large number of rectilinear enclosures and associated pits. A further large concentration of ditch and pit-like features were confirmed in the north-eastern corner of the site, although these could not be conclusively dated, and may be more recent.
