Report on a fluxgate gradiometer survey, conducted to inform proposed residential development on land off Tothby Lane, Alford. Magnetic anomalies clearly relating to extensive former settlement in this area were recorded, including the remains of a large number of rectilinear enclosures and associated pits. Traces of medieval ridge and furrow were also recorded across the site. {1} Subsequent trial trenching in this area resolved large parts of the settlement features as being of 3rd century Roman date, although could not provide conclusive dating for the concentration of features in the north-eastern corner of the site (see ELI12678).
