Full Description

A stone-lined drain of likely post-medieval date was recorded in May 2010, during the archaeological monitoring of groundworks for an extension to the vicarage at Church Walk, Bourne. The drain was lined with pieces of limestone rubble and medieval glazed roof tile fragments, and incorporated two pieces of re-used architectural fragments, thought to have been taken from Bourne Abbey. It could not be confirmed whether the drain was constructed before or after the abbey's demolition during the Dissolution, though the latter was thought more likely. The drain was sealed by a layer of demolition rubble and made ground, of likely later post-medieval date. {1}{2}
