Full Description

A stratified layer of clayey sand containing sherds of 3rd to 4th century Roman pottery was recorded during the archaeological monitoring of the groundworks for extensions to the Church of St Nicholas with St John, conducted between July 2009 and July 2012. The layer was cut by the limestone remains of an undated structure (see PRN71179), but appeared to have suffered some disturbance from subsequent activity, with some intrusive fragments of 19th century pottery being identified. Fragments of disarticulated human bone were also identified (but subsequently re-buried) in the layer, but it could not be determined whether these were also intrusive. {1}{2}
