Full Description

Part of the course of the former First World War military railway known as the Belton War Development Line was identified in May 2008, during a magnetometry survey conducted on land to the south of Belton Lane, Manthorpe. The railway was thought to be constructed in 1915, to serve the nearby Belton Park army camp. {1} Subsequent trial trenching in September 2009 revealed pieces of slag in the topsoil of this area. Although no structural remains of the former railway were revealed, it was thought that the slag represented former bedding material for the line, scattered by ploughing after the line was dismantled. {2}{3}
