Full Description
The first Wesleyan Methodist chapel in Tattershall Thorpe was opened in 1832 and although its exact location is uncertain it may be on the site of, or close to, the later chapel built in 1865. {1}
The chapel has an entry in the 1851 census of religious worship as seating about 90 people. {2}
In 1856 White's Directory describes the Wesleyan Chapel at Tattershall Thorpe as an old mud and stud building. {3}
The current chapel building is present on the Ordnance Survey maps of 1888 and 1905 at the junction of Thorpe Road and Chapel Lane. {4}{5}
The chapel is of red brick construction in Flemish Bond, under a slate roof, with Gothic lancet windows and decorative dentil courses below the eaves and above the door. A date stone on the front gable reads WESLEYAN 1865. A memorial arch in front of the chapel has three plaques with the following inscriptions:
Above entrance: TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN SACRED REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN OF TATTERSHALL THORPE WHO FELL IN THE TWO WORLD WARS.
Left of entrance: ALBERT SELLARS ALBERT TOYNE HENRY BOSWORTH 1914 — 1918
Right of entrance: JAMES W. JOHNSON PERCY C. BARNSDALE LESLIE AVISON 1939 — 1945 {6}
