Full Description

The memorial stands in front of the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel on Thorpe Road (see MLI99489). It is not known when the memorial was erected, but it was present by 1932. The memorial is in the form of an archway which is a less common form of memorial and it covers the pathway to the entrance of the Methodist Chapel. The memorial is built of red brick with limestone dressing and commemorates casualties in both the First and the Second World War. The memorial has three marble tablets. The tablet in the apex of the gable head is inscribed ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN SACRED REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN OF TATTERSHALL THORPE WHO FELL IN THE TWO WORLD WARS’. The tablet on the left pillar is inscribed with the names of three men followed by ‘1914-1918’, and that on the right by the names of three men followed by ‘1939-1945’. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {1} Tattershall Thorpe war memorial is the entrance archway at the Wesleyan chapel. The lancet arch, unveiled in 1922, was constructed out of red brick, with stone dressings, to match the chapel. The work was completed by Messrs J. Saxby and Son of Tattershall Bridge to honour the First World War dead from the village. It was later used to commemorate the Second World War fallen. {2}
