Full Description

The Pleasure Gardens at Skegness were laid out to the west of Grand Parade around 1876, on the site of a former coal yard where cargoes from Tyneside had been stored (see PRN 49558). A pavilion was built as the focus of the north end of the Pleasure Gardens and consisted of two parallel ranges, two rear projections and an attached house on the east side, presumably for caretaking, catering or gardening staff. The pavilion was, for many years, the principal hall in the town in which balls, concerts and parties took place. The pavilion was later used as a refreshment room, saleroom, flag factory and, most recently, as a public house known as The Inn on the Park. In 2014 it had been vacant since 2007 and was boarded up. The west end of the pavilion was used as a day nursery, the rear extension was occupied by St John’s Ambulance HQ, and Tower House was privately occupied. The pavilion has decorative piers, deep canopies and extensive timber valancing, which, together with the pavilion’s long frontage, is reminiscent of railway architecture. It is of a relatively standard design. There have been numerous alterations internally and very little of the original joinery, fittings or decorative finishes survive. Whilst the pavilion is of local architectural and historic interest, it did not fulfil the criteria for listing when assessed in 2014. {1}{2} The pavilion lies at the northern end of the Tower Gardens, which have been designated together with Skegness Esplanade as a Registered Park (see PRNs 49558 and 45510). {3}
