Full Description

A Wesleyan day school was built in 1859, after the demolition of the former Ebenezer Wesleyan Methodist chapel, on Wharf Road, Grantham. The school is depicted on the 1887 Ordnance Survey Town Map of Grantham, where it is labelled as being for boys and girls. It is depicted with a playground to the immediate north of the schoolhouse. The school closed in 1938 and was thereafter used as commercial premises, until its demolition in 1994. A photograph taken of the building in the 1980s shows the building to have been of red brick, with stone window dressings and quoins, and a stone slate roof. The building appears to have been named 'Newton House' at this time, and what had formerly been the school playground was then in use as a car park. {1}{2}
