Full Description

Archaeologists from Lincolnshire County Council undertook a small excavation following the discovery of a corroded iron blade by metal detectorists. The excavation revealed an almost complete, although degraded, articulated male skeleton. It was laid supine on a north to south alignment with the head located in the south. The upper portion of the skeleton had been damaged by plough action. There were three objects found with the burial, an iron seax, which had been placed on the right hand side of the skeleton with the left hand on the hilt, and a small iron knife which had been placed just below the left arm. The seax, a large knife or sword with a single cutting edge, was identified as dating from the mid sixth to early eighth century. There was also an iron strap fitting thafound in the topsoil close to the seax that may be associated. The dental attrition of the teeth indicated that the man was between forty and fifty-five years old at death. The weapons buried with him were not of particularly high status, but he was obviously important enough to have received an organised burial. The burial is likely to be an isolated inhumation rather than part of a pagan cemetery since no other cemetery-related finds have been made in the field. {1}
