Full Description

This railway underpass was the subject of a programme of historic building survey, conducted in December 2013, prior to its proposed removal for the Lincoln Eastern Bypass scheme. The underpass is on land off Washingborough Road, and provides access underneath the former Great Northern Avoiding Line, dismantled in the 1970s. It is unclear exactly when this line was constructed, though it is depicted, together with the underpass, on the 1889 Ordnance Survey map. It lies adjacent to another, slightly earlier underpass, built to the immediate south, which carried the former Lincoln and Spalding Railway, still in use as the London and North Eastern Railway. The underpass is formed of two brick walls, built of blue engineering bricks, laid in English bond, supporting a flat, reinforced concrete platform with metal railings above. Brick piers, flanked by sloping buttresses, are constructed on both sides of the underpass. {1}{2}
