Full Description

This railway underpass was the subject of a programme of historic building survey, conducted in December 2013, prior to its proposed removal for the Lincoln Eastern Bypass scheme. The underpass is on land off Washingborough Road, and provides access underneath the former Lincoln and Spalding Railway, which is still in use as the London and North Eastern Railway. It is thought to date to the opening of the railway line in 1882, and lies adjacent to another, slightly later underpass, built to the immediate north, which carried the former Great Northern Avoiding Line. The underpass is constructed of red brick, laid in an English bond, with blue engineering brick mixed into the upper courses. A tall, round headed arch gives access to the single tunnel with a barrel vaulted ceiling of red brick, again with some blue engineering brick mixed in, possibly the result of later repairs and resurfacing. Flanking both entrances to the tunnel are sloping buttresses, constructed of red brick and blue engineering brick, with stone coping and pyramidal caps. {1}{2}
