Full Description

Walkergate Chapel was built in 1836 by the Wesleyan Association Methodists - also known as the Warrenites - to seat 300. The chapel was enlarged in 1845, but was sold to the Baptists in 1848. The building is of red brick and has a gabled roof. It has pointed segemental window arches, with red brick cornices and window surrounds. At some point after the chapel closed, the building was converted into a garage, with heavy alterations made to the frontage and interior, most notably the installation of a large garage door. As of 2013 the building seems to be disused and is in poor condition. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6} The White's 1872 Trade Directory entry for Louth makes no mention of a chapel on Walkergate, suggesting the building may have already changed use by this date. {7} The chapel was surveyed as part of a programme of building recording undertaken in 2014. A datestone on the west gable elevation reads 'J W M …(1)878'. All internal fixtures and fittings have been removed as part of its conversion into a garage, which included the pouring of a concrete floor with an inspection pit at the southern end of the building, and the creation of offices and a raised gallery at the northern end. {8}{9}
