Full Description

Walkergate Chapel was built in 1836 by the Wesleyan Association Methodists - also known as the Warrenites - to seat 300. The chapel was enlarged in 1845, but was sold to the Baptists in 1848. The building is of red brick and has a gabled roof. It has pointed segemental window arches, with red brick cornices and window surrounds. At some point after the chapel closed, the building was converted into a garage, with heavy alterations made to the frontage and interior, most notably the installation of a large garage door. As of 2013 the building seems to be disused and is in poor condition. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6} The White's 1872 Trade Directory entry for Louth makes no mention of a chapel on Walkergate, suggesting the building may have already changed use by this date. It is possible that the congregation had moved to the Eastgate Baptist Chapel, thought to have been built in 1864 (see MLI86507). {7} The chapel was surveyed as part of a programme of building recording undertaken in 2014. A datestone on the west gable elevation reads 'J W M …(1)878'. All internal fixtures and fittings have been removed as part of its conversion into a garage, which included the pouring of a concrete floor with an inspection pit at the southern end of the building, and the creation of offices and a raised gallery at the northern end. {8}{9}
