Full Description
The former warehouse, at 31a Northgate, was assessed by English Heritage in May 2013, as part of the Louth Defined Area Survey. It was decided that the criteria for listing was not met in this instance, as the building has undergone significant alteration, which has transformed both the external and internal character and compromised its historical integrity.
It is understood that the former warehouse at 31a Northgate was built c.1794, a year after the construction of Eve Street was completed. It is brick-built in English Garden Wall bond, with 20th century vertical, sliding sash windows on the first and second floor of the Eve Street elevation. The ground floor is thought to have been converted to commercial premises before 1970 when it was used as an antique shop. It is now (2013) a plumbing merchants on the ground floor and flats on the first and second. 20th century shop windows exist on the ground floor with a door at the left side to provide access to the flats. A tier of loading doors, or 'taking-in' doors, are evident on the gable end, facing Northgate. The original openings are respected although the doors themselves have been replaced on the ground floor by a double, glazed door, providing access to the shop, and on the first and second floor by timber windows and wood panelling. The gable end is rough-cast rendered with a metal plate in the roof of the gable presumably marking the original position of the hoist beam. The ground floor is open plan although temporary partitioning has been inserted to provide office and storage space for the shop. Three rows of iron columns support the first-floor structure, each fixed by a square plate to the heavy wooden cross-beams. The remainder of the structure is concealed by the boarded ceiling. {1}{2}
